Valene Kane Talks About 'The Fall' and Jamie

“Whereas a lot of the time, as an actress, you go in and do your work alone, and then you leave and then you end up watching someone’s edited version of your work, which is kind of odd. You don’t know what to expect. Even with The Fall, I don’t know how it’s going to turn out – they can change so much of it. I did ADR [additional dialogue recording] the other day for some scenes I hadn’t heard, and I got goose pimples. The director wouldn’t show me any more, but I’m really excited about seeing it now,” she exclaims.

The Fall is reportedly the highest rated drama launch in eight years, and swept the boards at last year’s IFTAs. Was Valene surprised by the response to the series? “There’s something quite different and unique about this show because you know it’s him [Jamie Dornan], he’s an intriguing character, but he definitely does not look like a murderer. I was totally surprised by how it was received.”

“When my episode aired, I was in New York and two women spotted me, and I was in it for five minutes and they went out of their way to say, ‘I watched you last night and you blew me away,’” she reveals. “When I heard about it first, I was so excited that there was going to be an actual TV series set in Northern Ireland that wasn’t anything to do with politics or the Troubles and it had female characters – strong female characters – in it. It’s very rare that women are written as anything other than girlfriends or the psychos, they’re never the lead.

Gillian [Anderson] is the protagonist and she is amazing. For me, it was really exciting to be part of a European project, like The Killing, but one that was set in Northern Ireland. Everything I’ve done so far hasn’t allowed me to use my own accent. I’ve done the Southern accent, but that’s not mine. I did a film two years ago called Jump, with Charlene McKenna, and that was set in Derry and that was really good, but it didn’t hit the ground in the same way as The Fall.

Niamh McGrady Talks About 'The Fall' and Jamie

She’s The Fall’s troubled uniform cop who’s helping Stella Gibson track her serial killer.

But actress Niamh McGrady has revealed she almost missed out on a part in the hit drama.

The flame-haired 31-year-old said: "I knew it was being cast but I just couldn’t get seen for it.

"And not long after it started shooting I got a last minute audition – I had 24 hours to read four scripts and learn four scenes and get it on tape and sent to the producers.

"But I somehow managed and they cast me off the tape I’d sent so I didn’t meet anybody before I walked onto the set.

"In a couple of days I was in Belfast at the read-through with big names like Gillian and Jamie – an incredible bunch of actors around a table.

"It was all very fast and a bit overwhelming really."

In the past few days the show has been criticised for glamourising sexual violence from some quarters.

But Niamh believes the hit TV show has opened up the conversation about violence against women and that can only be a good thing.

She added: "I think The Fall is about trying to understand violence against women – things that can happen behind closed doors – the show goes a long way to try and help to understand it.

"Also there are so many different and interesting female characters in The Fall – the women in the series are not the archetypal way we see women represented on television all the time.

"The women are what this show is really about and I feel very strongly about that."

Niamh’s character Danielle Ferrington is an intense young woman who has already let the killer slip through her fingers once but the actress says she has no problem escaping the drama when the cameras stop rolling.

She said: "There’s great banter between cast and crew and there is a lovely working environment so you never really feel the need to escape from it.”

And she reckons her co-star Jamie Dornan bears no resemblance either to Paul Spector or his upcoming character Christian Grey but she’ll be glued to 50 Shades when it is released.

Niamh added: "50 Shades is going to be massive - even I have been watching the trailers because I’m going to be interested to see what it’s like as I have read all the books myself.

"It’s funny because the character in 50 shades is probably not a million miles away from Paul Spector – a very controlling guy with a dark past.

"But Jamie is very funny – he is 100 million miles away from that, he can been seen kicking a football about on set at lunchtime, having a laugh and being very easy going.

"He’s very good fun to be around and we have shared a lot of laughs."

Bronagh Waugh Talks About Jamie

Millions have been glued to BBC’s chiller drama The Fall and watching on the edge of their seats since it returned for a second series three weeks ago.

With actor Jamie Dornan in the role of twisted sex killer Paul and Gillian Anderson as Stella, the policewoman trying to hunt him down, it’s been a creepy ratings winner for BBC2.

Former Hollyoaks actress Bronagh Waugh went back to her native Northern Ireland for filming of the series as Paul’s (now estranged) missus Sally Ann.

The 32-year-old, once a regular on Lark Lane, is now married – on screen at least – to the nation’s scariest man.

So what’s it like cosying up week after week with a serial killer?

“It is a pleasure to work with such a charming and talented actor as Jamie,” Bronagh tells Insider, “although it is hard for me to separate being both a viewer and actor in not being able to unsee the horrific things that my character’s husband has done in the first season so that I can pick up where we left off with Sally-Ann being completely unaware of her husband’s dark secret.”

Alongside his sinister role as Paul, Jamie is about to have another massive profile part in the New Year.

He’s been cast as Christian Grey in the big screen version of the saucy bestselling novel Fifty Shades of Grey, so maybe that puts Bronagh in an enviable position after all ...

“I haven’t read the books (50 Shades),” she laughs, “but of course I’ll watch the film and support Jamie.

"All of us in The Fall team are so proud of him.”

Paul Spector Is On Irish Examiner's "The Top 10 Greatest Irish TV Characters" List

9. Paul Spector, The Fall (Jamie Dornan)

50 Shades of Grey is set to make Jamie Dornan a star. But you wonder if his performance in the S&M bonkbuster will be one tenth as convincing as his portrayal of a charming serial killer in Belfast-set procedural The Fall.

Handsome and affable, his monstrousness is rendered all the more shocking by his ability to charm and seduce his way through life.

Bronagh Waugh Talks About Jamie

“Jamie Dornan’s sweat doesn’t smell!”

HEAT MAGAZINE: She’s gone from soapstress to big-time star in less than 12 months. JEN CROTHERS finds out how…

So, the world’s sexiest man, Jamie Dornan, just happens to be your snog partner on The Fall. Were you nervous working with him?

No because we’ve been on this journey together for two years now, so it’s just weird. He’d be mortified if anyone thought that. It’s just Jamie! We screen-tested together, we got on really well, and it just seemed to work. It was really weird when we did the first series, because no one really knew who Jamie was.

Really?

Yeah. When we were filming, I got tortured all the time for pictures because of Hollyoaks, but no one knew who Jamie was then. We took our kids [from the show] to Belfast Zoo on a bonding day and I got stopped everywhere. He was like, “This is so weird.” He’s such a shy person and he’s very self-deprecating. I was like “Yeah, if the show’s a success, you’ll have to get used to it.” Fast-forward a year, and he’s one of the most famous men on the planet. Filming the second season, he’d stop traffic!

Do you find him sexy, though?

When you work in the industry, nothing is very sexy. You are working with someone and it’s work. So I wasn’t fazed at all, because he’s just my colleague.

What’s the least sexy thing about Jamie?

Probably him playing football with the crew lads and getting really sweaty. On my last day, I went to hug him goodbye and he was soaking and he went, “C’mere!” He gave me a big hug and I was like, “Urgh, your face is just wet with sweat.” But other people would probably find that really sexy. I didn’t. [Laughs.]

Did it smell?

No. It just felt as if someone had licked your face.

How does everyone on The Fall feel about Jamie doing Fifty Shades of Grey?

Everyone on the team is so excited and really pleased for him, and I’ll definitely watch it. I think it will be strange, but I think if anyone’s going to do it, he’ll do it really well.

Do other celebrities take you more seriously now, though?

It’s more the people I fangirl over saying that they enjoy the show. Like Lena Dunham.

Actual Lena Dunham?

I remember waking up at 7am one morning, and Jamie [Dornan] had texted me and he was like, “Get the f*** out of bed. I know you’re in bed – wake the f*** up! Check your Twitter now!” I got up and checked my Twitter and I had thousands of new followers – Lena Dunham had tweeted me.

Sally Ann wears lots of dowdy jumpers – what’s the worst thing you’ve had to wear on the show?

Nothing! In the first season, I had to be totally naked apart from football socks and some wellies, and that was really, really mortifying, being naked in a barn in front of a horse that kept peeing continually. I hadn’t been to the gym in over two years because I had a really bad back injury, and Jamie had a really bad shoulder injury, so we were like two geriatrics. There was nothing sexy about it! [Laughs.]
